
Abhilash Malayil
Abhilash Malayil is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady. His specialisation lies in Malabar and South Canara’s 18th and 19th-century economic history. He completed his doctoral research at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology-Mandi, Himachal Pradesh in 2018 Subsequently, he held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from October 2018 to September 2020 at the Department of Asian Studies, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as part of the European Research Council (ERC) research project, “The New Ecology of Expressive Modes in Early-Modern South India (NEEM),” led by Prof. David Shulman. His academic background includes a Master’s Degree in History from the Central University of Hyderabad and an M.Phil. in Medieval History from the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. His research interests encompass the histories of sharecropping, landed property, and rural markets, and he is currently working on a book manuscript concerning money-credit instruments and farm labour in the late 18th century. His Malayalam monograph, Rayyathuwari: Company Statum Political Econamiyum; Malabar Jillaye Aspadamakkiyulla Nireekshanangal, published by Other Books Calicut in 2021, received the 2023 N.V. Krishna Varier Academic Prize from the State Institute of Languages, Thiruvananthapuram. He is actively involved in academic administration, serving as a Board of Studies member for History Post Graduation at Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady. He also serves as a Karwaan Book Award Jury member and on the International Advisory Board of the Institute of Indian Studies, University of Groningen, The Netherlands.
