About Us

Institute for Social Sciences, Humanities and Oceanic Research (I-SHORE)

is primarily a network of scholars from Kerala working all over the country and the world, and with a shared interest in Kerala's broader histories and cultures in the Indian Ocean world.

I-SHORE aims to sensitize the Kerala public sphere on the importance of Social Science and Humanities. In keeping with the confluences such an enterprise necessarily demands, the scholars hail from diverse disciplines such as History, Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, Gender Studies, Philosophy, Literature, and Developmental Studies. It aims to promote advanced studies and research and to provide a platform for national and international scholars and researchers who are interested in the socio-cultural and economic traditions and conditions of the region.

Currently, there is an increasing number of scholars from the region and abroad who are researching the diverse aspects of Kerala in a transregional perspective.

The I-SHORE hopes to enhance

further researches along these lines through international collaborations with universities and institutions. In the globalized ecosystem of academic and intellectual interactions, we hope to facilitate the exchange of resources for an advanced and better future for social scientific and humanities research in the region. We also intend to work with local institutions and governmental and public bodies to stimulate, facilitate, demand, and recognize the highest standards of excellence in research and higher education.

Together we aim to promote advanced studies and research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, two areas that are largely marginalized in the existing higher education schemes of the state. In the long run, we aim to create an independent academic space for local, national and international scholars and researchers who are interested in the socio-cultural and economic traditions and conditions of the region in order to work together across disciplines for critical and creative understanding of the past and present of our society.
